Here are some general steps you can take to prevent the spread of mosquito-borne diseases:

Eliminate Standing Water: Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water. So the most effective way to limit mosquito populations is by eliminating these potential breeding grounds. Check around your home for any containers that could hold water: pots, buckets, barrels, tires, wheelbarrows, wading pools, drain pipes, etc. Empty and scrub these containers at least once a week to remove any mosquito eggs. If you have ponds or decorative water features, consider adding mosquito-eating fish, or use mosquito dunks, which are a type of bacteria that kills mosquito larvae but is harmless to other animals.

Maintain Pools and Spas: Chlorine typically kills mosquito larvae, so maintaining your pool’s chlorine levels can prevent it from becoming a mosquito breeding site. If you have a pool or spa that you’re not using, consider covering it or treating it with a pool chemical even in the off-season.

Install Window and Door Screens: Window and door screens can effectively keep mosquitoes out of your home. Make sure the screens have no holes and fit tightly into the frame. Patch up any holes promptly, as mosquitoes can enter even through very small gaps.

Use Mosquito Repellents: When outdoors, especially during peak mosquito activity (usually from dusk till dawn), apply an EPA-registered insect repellent on exposed skin and clothing. Repellents that contain DEET, Picaridin, IR3535, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus are known to be effective. Remember to follow the product instructions.

Wear Protective Clothing: When in areas with high mosquito activity, wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants. Clothing can be treated with permethrin, an insecticide that kills mosquitoes on contact. However, permethrin should not be applied directly to the skin. Wearing light-colored clothing can also help as mosquitoes are often attracted to dark colors.

Use Mosquito Nets: Bed nets treated with an insecticide like permethrin can prevent mosquito bites while you sleep, especially in areas where air conditioning or screen protection is not available. This is more applicable for people who are camping or living in areas with a high mosquito population.

Coordinate with Local Health Authorities: Local health or vector control authorities may have programs to control mosquito populations in public and residential areas. They can spray pesticides, drop larvicide, or conduct other mosquito-control activities. If you notice a lot of mosquito activity in your area, you may want to alert them.

We understand the impact that mosquito-borne diseases can have on communities, especially in areas like Bangladesh, where dengue fever is currently a significant concern. It’s this global perspective that informs everything we do at BestCustomScreens.com, and we’re committed to sharing effective, accessible solutions to help control mosquito populations and reduce the spread of these diseases.

That’s why we’re excited to highlight a recent DIY video from our very own Kaiyum Ahmed, Digital Operations Manager at Best Custom Screens. Kaiyum, who works remotely from Bangladesh, understands firsthand the urgent need for practical and cost-effective mosquito control measures.
